Anthropologist Sheela Athreya supports the "braided stream" model. Through this lens, human evolution is seen as a braided stream rather than a branching tree—smaller streams represent evolutionary events that separate populations, gene pools, or lineages from each other. In time they either go extinct or re-unify into the common gene pool.
