The girl who cried wolf: reflections of a childhood sexual abuse survivor

Amelia Malone is the pseudonym for a writer and illustrator who has chosen to remain anonymous because it is not safe for her to speak openly about the topic of childhood sexual abuse. The “Me Too era” has still not given way to a new world in which it is suddenly safe for survivors to come forward. Old beliefs still pervade even if people are less open about vocalising them in public and old abusers are still clinging desperately to the last of their power. Many childhood sexual abuse survivors have tried to seek justice and continue to be knocked down, not believed, threatened, assaulted and accused of lying and/or delusional thinking (often by their closest friends and family, and even by medical professionals who do not adequately understand the complex factors at play in cases of childhood sexual abuse). The author looks forward to a day when we can partake in this conversation without fear, and without needing to hide behind a pseudonym in order to stay safe.
